A fatal crash involving a minivan and a road crew is expected to keep a stretch of Interstate 94 closed for several hours Friday.
The eastbound side of the freeway is closed at Conner Avenue in Detroit because of the crash, which occurred at Barrett Avenue at about 11 a.m., according to Michigan State Police. Traffic is being rerouted at the scene, and police expect the freeway to remain closed until at least 2 p.m.
Wayne County Road Commission officials confirmed a GMC minivan hit one of their arrow trucks used by road crews.
The minivan was occupied by seven people, one of whom was killed in the crash, from an adult handicapped facility, Local 4 reported.
Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to free the driver from the minivan, according to the station's reports. It was not known whether the driver was the deceased victim.
The six surviving occupants of the minivan were transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital and St. John Hospital with injuries, Local 4 reported. The extent of their injuries was not known.
The driver of the road commission vehicle was taken to a clinic as a precaution, the station learned.
The eastbound side of the freeway remains closed while police continue their investigation.
