Helicopter Crash Began With Traffic Stop

Two Men Dead

POSTED: Thursday, April 13, 2006

The helicopter that crashed in Scio Township Thursday afternoon began with a traffic stop.

Police tried to stop a vehicle on Interstate 94, when the person inside the car fled on foot. In an effort to catch the suspect, who was supposed to be in police custody, officers asked for extra help, Local 4 reported.

Chelsea Police Chief Scott Sumner and Chelsea Fire Department Captain Matt Tuttle volunteered to go up in a helicopter to help track the suspect. The chopper went down in the woods on Staebler Road near Jackson Road, according to police.

Both Tuttle and Sumner are dead.

Crews are at the scene, working to determine the cause of the crash.
