POSTED: 5:17 pm EDT April 14, 2006

If you're planning on mailing a baby chick as gift for Easter, you may want to reconsider.

Baby chicks that are mailed have been found dead or dying. A local Humane Society said that without food, water or temperature control, thousands of baby birds die every year, Local 4 reported.

What animals can be sent through the mail?

  • Small cold-blooded animals, except snakes and turtles. These include baby alligators, bloodworms, earthworms, mealworms, salamanders, leeches, lizards, snails and tadpoles.

  • Adult fowl. These include turkeys, guinea fowl, doves, pigeons, pheasants, partridges, quail, ducks, geese and swans if sent by express mail.

  • Adult chickens. The chickens must be sent by express mail in biological secure containers that meets mailing standards.
