Local Family Mourns Daughter After She Dies On Cruise Ship

POSTED: Monday, July 31, 2006
UPDATED: 8:47 am EDT July 31, 2006

A Collier County woman connected to a prominent family in southwest Florida and Michigan is dead after she went missing from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that was sailing in the Mediterranean.

Elizabeth Galeana, 22, had been missing since Tuesday morning.

Galeana is from Naples and her family owns the Galeana Automotive Group, based in Fort Myers.

They also own several car dealerships in Metro Detroit.

Galeana was aboard the Voyager of the Seas, traveling from Rome to Naples, Italy. She was last seen around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday when she went to her parents' cabin for the night.

The next morning, around 7:30 a.m., Galeana was reported missing by her sister. According to the cruise line, staff issued on- board announcements and searched for her.

The U.S. and Italian coast guards, the FBI, the U.S. Consulate in Naples, Italy, and the Naples police were all involved in the investigation and search.

Monday morning, the family of the 22-year old confirmed she died after disappearing from the cruise ship last week.

Several family members returned to Livonia as soon as the ship docked in Barcelona.

The Galeanas said they want to deal with the tragedy in private and released this written statement to Local 4:

"Obviously, our entire family is devastated by the loss of Elizabeth. While we are awaiting the completion of the investigation into this tragedy, from what we know at this time, we do not believe Elizabeth's death was the result of any foul play. We want to publicly thank the management of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and especially the officers and crew to the Voyager of the Seas for the professionalism and compassion they displayed during this ordeal. They could not have done more than they did to help us deal with our anxiety and loss. We also want to thank the representatives of the United States government, especially Scott Turn, US council general in Naples, Italy, and his staff for their untiring assistance in helping us deal with the Italian authorities and the entire situation. We have nothing further to say at this time and hope everyone will respect our desire to deal with the in privacy. Certainly you are free to draw whatever conclusions you wish from our statement. It is not our desire or intent to comment further at this time. Thank you for your interest and concern."
