Reservists Called Up, Employers Lose Workers
Pentagon Activated 5,000 Reservists Last Week
Employers across Michigan are preparing to lose workers as military reservists are called up for active duty.
The Pentagon activated 5,000 reservists last Thursday to join the 35,000 called up the week before. The number is likely to go up. The reserves have more than one million members, making them half the U. S. military.
It is the first time in a decade that corporations will have to deal with such a loss of the part-time soldiers. The last time this happened was during the Persian Gulf War.
The loss of workers is expected to make it harder for companies to deal with an economic downturn exacerbated by the terrorist attacks.
Some Michigan military personnel
from Selfridge Air National Guard have been called to active duty. The 127th Airlift Group is getting ready to take off for Germany later this week. As part of their mission the troops will be on duty in Bosnia.
