DPS Wants To Delay Count Day After Strike

District Could Lose $219M

UPDATED: 5:54 pm EDT September 21, 2006

Detroit Public School officials are asking the state of Michigan for an extension of Count Day to sort out student numbers.

The official Count Day is scheduled for Wednesday.

The district announced that it has nearly 30,000 fewer students than it did last year, Local 4 reported. This could mean a loss of about $219 million for Detroit Schools from the state, according to district officials and Local 4 reports.

DPS officials said that if these numbers hold, the district would be devastated financially.

A strike involving Detroit teachers delayed the start of the school year and reportedly caused thousands of students to transfer to other districts.

Parents are reminded that they can enroll their children on Friday at any Detroit school, even though schools are closed for the day. Students can also be enrolled on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Detroit Public Schools Welcome Center in Detroit's New Center Area.
