UNION TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

Authorities say a Central Michigan University student tried to poison a roommate at their apartment by putting bleach in a glass of iced tea.

19-year-old Kayla Ashlyn Bonkowski is charged with 1 Felony Count of Poisoning – Food / Drink / Medicine / Water Supply. It carries a maximum punishment of 15 years in prison.

The investigation by a Trooper from the MSP Mount Pleasant revealed that a dispute between two female roommates over some dirty dishes, escalated to the point that Bonkowski put a dangerous substance BLEACH into the 20 year old victims ice tea. The victim sought medical treatment and has been released

Reached by email, Bonkowski told The Associated Press on Wednesday morning she needed to consult with a lawyer before commenting.

Authorities say they believe Bonkowski put bleach in the drink at the apartment in Union Township, located near the Mount Pleasant school about 120 miles northwest of Detroit. Police say the roommate was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Police said in the criminal complaint that Bonkowski wrote a statement and that she told police she put bleach in her roommate’s drink.
