POKAGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

Authorities in southwestern Michigan say a motorist is injured and a horse is dead following a traffic crash.

The Cass County sheriff's department says 35-year-old Krista Hartman of Dowagiac was driving Wednesday night in Pokagon Township when she hit the horse, which was in the roadway. The woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

MLive.com reports the horse, which didn't survive the crash, got onto the road after its owner accidentally left a gate open.

The crash is under investigation.
