A Canton restaurant owner has pleaded guilty to filing a false income tax return in 2005.
Prosecutors said Manubhai Patel, 67, and his wife, Ilaben Patel -- owners of Krishna Catering -- made more than $133,500 during 2005 for the Indian cuisine business but only claimed an income of $27,721 on their joint federal income tax return.
Prosecutors said Patel admitted that he knew the numbers were fudged and that his fraud cost the United States more than $20,000.
The maximum penalty for making false, fictitious, or fraudulent claims is imprisonment of not
more than three years and a $250,000 fine.
Patel is scheduled to be sentenced in January.
