A company has cancelled a contract allowing off-duty sheriff's deputies to keep unauthorized people away from work sites along a 50-mile pipeline replacement project in Michigan.
WHMI-FM and the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell report Enbridge Energy LP cancelled the contract this week.
The practice had raised concerns among some people who own property along the project. They say it's a conflict of interest for the Livingston County sheriff's deputies.
Enbridge had said the company wants to ensure the safety of the public and employees. And Sheriff Bob Bezotte said there was no conflict of interest.
A hearing is Sept. 25 in a case brought by property owners about work in the area. The contract with Enbridge could be reinstated afterward.
