Michigan authorities say a man left multiple clues linking himself to a marijuana plot on state land in the northern Lower Peninsula.
The state Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday that conservation officers in Antrim County were looking for illegal bear baits when they found marijuana plants as tall as 8 feet.
One week later, the DNR says agents found 54-year-old Mark Derenzy of Mancelona nearby, illegally operating an all-terrain vehicle without a helmet and carrying a cooler of beer.
Agents discovered an open beer can from the same lot in the marijuana patch. When officers went to Derenzy's house, they heard him leaving an answering machine message saying he'd "run out of gas while trying to avoid the DNR."
Derenzy got 30 days in jail and forfeited the ATV.
