DETROIT -

DTE Energy said Wednesday morning that 1,000 of its southeast Michigan customers remained without power following weekend storms that rolled through metro Detroit.

The majority of the power outages are in Wayne County.

The utility says it hopes to restore electrical service by day's end.

In Detroit, school officials say power outages prompted them to close eight schools on Tuesday. Two others were being shut down because of power problems.

The storms on Saturday generated 2-inch-wide hail and winds gusting to 64 mph that knocked down trees and power lines and left 125,000 utility customers in the dark.

As a reminder, stay at least 20 feet away from downed power lines and anything they are surrounding.

To report a downed power line call DTE Energy at 800-477-4747.
