CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

A Canton father of a 4-month-old boy has been charged with first-degree child abuse on accusations he fractured his son's skull.

Anthony Lawrence Sewejkis, 25, broke down in tears as he was arraigned Friday. Police said he was arrested Wednesday after hospital staff contacted them with suspicions of abuse to the baby.

Police said Sewejkis is accused of pushing the baby's head into the floor at an apartment on Michigan Avenue.

The baby, whose name is Hunter, is in critical condition at University of Michigan hospital.

The baby's mother, Leanne Garlick, said Sewejkis had originally told her the baby had fallen off the couch while she was at work.

"I feel completely blind-sided from it all to be honest. I mean, this is not something that I ever, in my wildest dreams, expect that this is something he would have done," Garlick said.

Garlick said her son has undergone several surgeries to alleviate pressure on his brain.

Sewejkis is due back in court on Dec. 19.
