Dearborn police have issued a community alert after two men posing water department workers stole from an elderly woman on Wednesday.
Police said the victim, who lives on Anthony Street, told them two Arabic men knocked on her door and told her they needed to check on the water in her home. She let them in and they went on to say she needed to pay her water bill.
Police said the two men followed the woman to a safe she kept in her home and stole it, including money inside, when she went to open it to get money for the bill.
They fled in a 2011-2012 Ford Edge.
"The communities support is needed to assist in watching over our elderly residents. Utility companies do not go to resident's homes and collect cash payments. Residents should contact the police immediately if someone comes to your home requesting cash payments,” Police Chief Ron Haddad said.
All utility company employees will have proper identification.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dearborn Police Tip line at 313-943-3012.
