Detroit Catholic Central named one of top Catholic high schools in nation

Honor announced at enthusiastic Catholic Central school assembly

NOVI, Mich. – Students at Detroit Catholic Central high school Friday celebrated a new honor for their school.

Students attended a spirited assembly marking the traditional "Boys Bowl" football game that dates back to 1944.

During the assembly, school principal Fr. John Huber announced CC has received a coveted spot on a national honor roll.

"As one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States," Fr. Huber said.

The award is based on academics and sharing of Catholic values.

The honor comes as the school has served as a rock for the Cipriano family.

Bob Cipriano was beaten to death during a break-in at the family's home in Farmington Hills.  Son Sal, who is a CC student, continues his recovery from being beaten during that attack. Mother Rose is improving from her injuries and last week attended a Catholic Central football game with younger son Tanner, who was present at Friday's rally, wearing one of his late father's neckties.

School president Fr. Jefferson Thompson said the faith of students and faculty has helped everyone gain strength.

"When those difficult days came our way a few months ago, we didn't have to go and discover the faith we had. It just came to the surface," Fr. Thompson said.

Senior Dan Savakus is one of the 1,070 students at Catholic Central. He said students know they can rely on one another for help whenever it is needed.

"It's not just talk, it's actions and u can feel it here," Savakus said.

Catholic Central was one of five Michigan schools listed among the top 50 Catholic high schools.

Others honored included Everest Collegiate high school in Clarkston, Father Gabriel Richard Catholic High School in Ann Arbor, Saint Francis high school in Traverse City and West Catholic high school in Grand Rapids.
