Detroit City Council votes unanimously to put city charter proposals on November ballot

Gov. Rick Snyder had objected to measures

DETROIT – Detroit city voters will have the chance to have their say on three revisions to the City Charter that were objected to by Gov. Rick Snyder.

Snyder on Thursday objected to proposed amendments dealing with the role of the head of Detroit's law department enforcing the charter, rehiring city employees and acceptable amounts for job-related gifts. He didn't object to a proposed change related to signatures candidates must collect to run for city offices.

On Friday, council members voted unanimously Friday to override Snyder's objections to clarifying the powers of the city's top corporation counsel.

The city's current top attorney, Krystal Crittendon, waged an unsuccessful battle to challenge Detroit's financial stability agreement with the state.

Council members say the revision does not give any additional powers.

All three measures will appear as proposals C, G, and P on the November ballot.
