DETROIT – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will remain hospitalized Friday, but wasn't facing anything serious.

What happened?

Bing press secretary Naomi Patton says Bing had a dental appointment Thursday morning and "continued to experience some discomfort."

Patton says in an email that Bing went to Henry Ford Hospital on Thursday afternoon "and was subsequently admitted for observation and as a precautionary measure."

On Friday, Patton said Bing had been diagnosed with an inflammation of the intestine, a non-life-threatening condition.

"He continues to rest comfortably, and a decision will be made later today regarding his release," Patton said.

Later in the afternoon, in a news released, Chief of Staff Kirk Lewis said the mayor would remain in the hospital for further observation.

"I spoke with Mayor Bing late this afternoon. He indicated he would remain in the hospital for further investigation," Lewis said. "He continues to be upbeat and rests comfortably."

Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh expressed his concern for the mayor.

"I am aware of the situation and wish the mayor a speedy recovery," said Pugh.

About the mayor

The 68-year-old mayor is a former businessman and retired NBA player who spent most of his career with the Detroit Pistons.

He was elected to a four-year term as mayor in 2009.
