Detroit-area doctor arrested for outburst over canceled flight at Florida airport

Dr. Nana Mimura arrested, charged with disturbing peace after police say she became angry over canceled flight in Fort Myers, Fla.

DETROIT – A Metro Detroit doctor was arrested Thursday after, police say, she became very angry when she was told her flight had been canceled because of a Spirit Airlines staffing problem at an airport in Fort Myers, Fla.

Dr. Nana Mimura was on her way home from sunny Fort Myers when she lost her temper at Southwest Florida International Airport. She began screaming and swearing at the Spirit counter, police say. It was recorded on her cellphone.

Mimura's rant prompted Spirit ticket agents to call police.

"The customer and her husband requested a refund rather than waiting until this afternoon's flight, which we provided," said Misty Pinson, spokeswoman for Spirit. "She then started causing a disturbance. When police were called in, she was escorted away."

Police say Mimura's husband calmed down, but not her. She was abusive to the police officers and ended up being put on the ground, cuffed and taken to the police department. She is charged with disturbing the peace.

Fellow passengers who also had to deal with the flight cancellation say it was aggravating but not worth getting arrested over. They called Spirit Airlines corporate.

Mimura is an internist in Oakland County. She was not reachable Thursday night when Local 4 tried to contact her.
