Detroit-area girl, in Grand Rapids for church event, killed in crash; alcohol possible factor
Police say an 8-year-old Detroit-area girl who was attending a church conference in west Michigan with her family has been killed in a hit-and-run crash.
The accident happened about 2 p.m. Sunday in Grand Rapids.
Police say the suspects were traveling in a northbound Ford Explorer when they struck the family's westbound vehicle. They say the unidentified girl was one of six passengers in the victims' vehicle. Five additional passengers were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A 10-year-old and 4-year-old remain hospitalized.
Police say the SUV driver and his front seat passenger were arrested after fleeing the scene on foot. They remain lodged in the Kent County jail pending charges.
No further details were released.
Police say alcohol may have been a factor.
