WARREN, Mich. -

Authorities say a parked ambulance with its engine running proved too hard to resist for a 31-year-old Detroit-area man.

Police said the ambulance crew left the keys in the ignition Feb. 28 while going into a home improvement store in Warren, north of Detroit.

When the crew returned and saw the vehicle was missing, the theft was reported to a company dispatcher who used GPS to help police track it. Officers stopped the rig a few miles away, but had to break a window to arrest the driver.

Lukasz Piatek of Sterling Heights faces a preliminary hearing Thursday on auto theft and drunken driving charges.
