An arts organization that this year moved into its new home in the Detroit Police Department's former Third Precinct station is hosting a grand opening.
Friday's event also marks the 10th anniversary celebration for 555 Nonprofit Gallery and Studios.
The event begins with a ceremony including 555, the building's other occupant Detroit Farm and Garden, their nonprofit landlord Southwest Housing Solutions and others. A new exhibit will open featuring the work of studio members, past and present members, and artists who have exhibited with 555.
There's live music planned. The studios -- including jail cells with bars still on the doors -- will be open. And art activities are planned in classroom space.
The city closed the police precinct in 2005 as part of a department-wide reorganization.
