DETROIT -

A Detroit middle school student brought a loaded gun to school Monday.

The student was caught by school security as he walked in the door at Marquette Elementary-Middle School on the city's east side. It's unclear exactly why the 13-year-old boy brought the .38 caliber handgun to school, but it may have been to scare off other students who had threatened him.

Detroit Public Schools officials say the handgun set off the metal detectors. School security moved quickly to confiscate the weapon.

The boy has been taken to a youth facility.

"Safety will always be our top priority and Detroit Public Schools has many systems in place at all schools to ensure the safety and security of children and adults," DPS said in a statement.

DPS did send an email to all parents of students at the school to inform them of the incident.
