Detroit cracks down on illegal businesses

'Operation Compliance' team will padlock doors of businesses that don't have proper licenses, permits

DETROIT -

A crack-down on illegal businesses in Detroit has begun.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said Operation Compliance will target six businesses Thursday that don’t have proper licenses or permits.

Their doors will be padlocked by an enforcement team, which is led by the City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department.

Police and fire officials are also involved.

If the business owner or any other individual breaches the sealed entrance of the closed businesses, they person will be subject to a $500 per day fine and/or imprisonment.

The enforcement team expects to close an average of 20 illegal businesses in Detroit each week. 

The locations of the targeted businesses won't be released until after the have shuttered.
