Detroit police find mother of 2 boys left home alone
Police find 2 young boys alone, without adult supervision outside Detroit apartment; mother found hours later
After more than 5 hours of searching, Detroit police have found the mother of two young boys who were left home alone Monday evening at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Rochester Street.
Officers were responding to an emergency call about children being left home alone. There was no adult supervision at the home when officers arrived. Police say the boys were wandering outside the home in the freezing cold weather.
The oldest boy had on a coat and shoes, but the younger one did not. The boys appear to be about 1 and 3 years old.
A neighbor had heard the boys' cries for help and called 911.
"One of them, he was about 4, so he was in his right mind. He put on his coat and shoes. The other, he was about 1. He was walking around here with no shoes, no coat. All he had on was his pants and a shirt -- a short sleeved one at that. He was out here shaking and crying," said the neighbor.
The children now are with Detroit police. Police are in contact with Child Protective Services.
The investigation continues. Until police learn more about why the boys were left, it may be some time before they are left in their mother's care.
"I mean it's a blessing to have kids. Just be careful out here. You can't leave them out here. It's too dangerous in this city," said the neighbor.
