DETROIT -

Emergency manager Roy Roberts has decided to keep a Southwest Detroit school -- slated for closing -- open for at least two years.

Why the change of heart?

Roberts said Thursday that shuttering Maybury Elementary would move its nearly 400 students to nearby schools and bring those facilities near capacity.

He also cites Maybury's location in a densely populated area and concerns a vacant building would have on the neighborhood. The district intends to work with local population data experts to study elementary school-age population trends in the area.

In February, the district announced that Maybury would be one of nine school closures.
