DETROIT -

A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to two years of probation for a hit-and-run last year that killed a 25-year-old man.

Northville police said Joshua Green was walking with friends at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 3 along Griswold Street when he stepped out into the street from the sidewalk and was hit by an SUV.

The SUV never stopped and Green later died after being rushed to Botsford Hospital.

Police said South Lyon resident Kevin Alexander turned himself into police on Jan. 20. Police said he told them he was heading downtown after dropping a friend off and thought Green or one of his friends had thrown something at his SUV when he passed them. He didn't stop but later realized what had happened when he saw local news reports about the incident, police said.

Alexander was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury or death and pleaded no contest.

During the first year of his probation, Alexander must spend his weekends in jail. During the second year, he will wear a tether.
