Elderly Detroit couple ambushed by gunman at home, suspect later surrenders
Police say aware neighbor saw what was happening on Mendota, called police
Local 4 cameras were there Thursday morning as Detroit police continued to investigate a break-in at an elderly couple's home on the city's west side.
Police said the couple, who are in their 80s, came home from church last Wednesday night and were ambushed in their driveway on Mendota by a man with a silver handgun.
The man then held the couple captive while he went through their home and put jewelry into a pillowcase. But police said a vigilant neighbor saw what was happening and called police.
The man briefly barricaded himself at the home before calling 911 to surrender.
