The former supervisor of Royal Oak Township has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges he took a $10,000 bribe from a company bidding on a demolition contract in the economically struggling Detroit suburb.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit said William Morgan received his sentence Thursday in federal court. He was accused of defrauding the Department of Housing and Urban Development, violating the Clean Air Act and committing bribery.

Federal authorities say Morgan took money from Sureguard/PBM, which was bidding on a contract to tear down an abandoned theater. The township board gave the contract to a lower bidder.

A co-conspirator, Terrance Parker, received a 21-month sentence and two others have yet to be sentenced.
