Fare increases approved for Harsens Island ferry
Users will pay $1 more in fares starting Sunday and an additional $1 in January. A roundtrip ticket for a vehicle is currently $7
The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a settlement agreement and fare increases for the ferry to Harsens Island in Lake St. Clair.
The commission announced the agreements Friday with Champion's Auto Ferry, which had raised the possibility of ending service. Regulatory officials say the order creates a plan for buying new ferries and capital expenses to reduce customers' concerns.
Users will pay $1 more in fares starting Sunday and an additional $1 in January. A roundtrip ticket for a vehicle is currently $7.
The commission last approved an increase in 2008.
Harsens Island is in St. Clair County's Clay Township, about 30 miles east-northeast of Detroit. It has about 1,200 year-round residents and the summer population grows to about 5,000.
The island is accessible by boat and an airstrip.
