DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Department of Transportation is giving $30 million to the parallel public transit systems that operate in Detroit and its suburbs.
U.S. Sen. Carl Levin said Thursday that the money was awarded jointly to the Detroit Department of Transportation and the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation, known as SMART.
Levin also says Flint's Mass Transportation Authority is getting $4 million to replace old buses and vans.
Levin sis the Detroit-area grant will allow for transfer of some excess city buses to SMART and pay for rehabilitation of buses in both fleets. He says it also will pay for on-board security cameras and help repair fire damage at a Detroit bus maintenance facility.
The grants come from the Federal Transit Administration's State of Good Repair Program.
