ROYAL OAK, Mich. -

When you have influenza, sometimes you face the choice of whether to stay home and tough it out, or head to the doctor. Beaumont Health Systems wants to make this decision an easy one for Metro Detroit residents.

Beaumont has set up a toll-free, 24-hour community flu hotline to help residents identify flu symptoms and determine the right treatment option.

The flu hotline can be reached at 888-375-4161.

Registered Beaumont nurses will be on hand to answer your questions and provide you with accurate information about flu symptoms and if medical attention is needed.

According to Beaumont, people at higher risk include those with asthma, severe heart or lung disease, insulin-requiring diabetes, cancer or other immune-compromising conditions; pregnant women; and those over 65 years of age or under 2 years of age.

People should seek emergency medical care if they have high fevers, with a temperature of 102 or greater, with chills and develop shortness of breath.

Seasonal flu symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue.
