Ford Road, I-275 intersection is most accident-prone in Metro Detroit, Michigan

MDOT plans to make Canton Township's Ford Road, I-275 intersection safer

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A busy traffic intersection in Canton Township is now labeled the most accident-prone in Metro Detroit and the state of Michigan.

The intersection at Ford Road and Interstate 275 looks like rush hour 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So it's no surprise to many drivers that it is the top spot for crashes in the state of Michigan.

According to state records, the three-mile stretch on Ford Road between Canton Center Road and I-275 has seen more than 2,300 accidents in the past five years. That's 460 accidents each year and 1.25 crashes each day.

Ford Road has a shopping center at every corner in that area. It's home to Ikea, which has helped to add to the traffic madness.

MDOT is looking to make the area safer. Canton Township leaders are hopeful they will receive an $18 million to do just that.

MDOT wants drivers and businesses to submit their input on what needs to change in the area.

The public can access a comment form at www.canton-mi.org and email yungg@michigan.gov or stamp mail it before July 6 to MDOT Taylor TSC at 6510 Telegraph Road, Taylor, MI 48180.
