DETROIT -

Local 4 is happy to report that the veterinary clinic treating the dog shot in the face by a home intruder, says phones are ringing off the hook with support for Niko.

So far more than $15,000 was donated to help with the dog's medical costs.

Gail King was just out of a hospital on Monday after she was shot in her chest this past weekend.

The only thing on King's mind is her yellow Labrador, Niko -- her pride and joy who also is recovering from a gunshot wound.

On Saturday night, King's screen door was open to let in fresh air. Niko was laying in front of it when an intruder entered the home and fired two shots -- one at King and the other at Niko.

The dog was left in a pool of blood. His face was mangled. He was taken to Affiliated Veterinary where he went through extensive surgery. He has been hooked up to multiple IVs. More work is ahead, which will cost more money than his family has.

Veterinary bills exceeded $5,000, the family says.

"If we exceed the amount needed for Niko, we will be giving the remainder of the money to Niko's owner, for her medical bills and to be set aside for Niko's future medical bills," said a representive from Affiliated Veterinary Emergency Services.

No one has been arrested while police investigate.
