HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

The neighborhood surrounding a gas main break in Harrison Township near South River Road and Jefferson Avenue is on alert.

Neighbors who live on South River have been told to stay in their homes.

Students at nearby Lobbestael Elementary, L'Anse Creuse High School and L'Anse Creuse Middle School Central are being held.

Students can be released if a parent is picking them up as South River Road is closed in both directions.

Officials say the problem may continue for several hours.

The only information immediately available from Consumers Energy was that it was a 6-inch main.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene.
