Viviano fills the vacancy left after the resignation of Democrat Diane Hathaway, who quit the Supreme Court in scandal last month. Hathaway pleaded guilty to fraud in a scheme to mislead a bank in the short sale of her home in Grosse Pointe Park.
Viviano is a Republican who comes from a very well-known Macomb County family.
"I would, of course, like to start off by thanking the governor for placing his confidence in me. This is a tremendous honor for me and my entire family," Viviano said during a news conference on Wednesday.
Hathaway left the court on Jan. 21, but her departure was publicly known much earlier in January.
