Gov. Rick Snyder names Macomb County's Judge David Viviano to Michigan Supreme Court
Judge Viviano fills Supreme Court vacancy left by Diane Hathaway
Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed Macomb County Judge David Viviano Michigan Supreme Court.
Viviano fills the vacancy left after the resignation of Democrat Diane Hathaway, who quit the Supreme Court in scandal last month. Hathaway pleaded guilty to fraud in a scheme to mislead a bank in the short sale of her home in Grosse Pointe Park.
Viviano is a Republican who comes from a very well-known Macomb County family.
"I would, of course, like to start off by thanking the governor for placing his confidence in me. This is a tremendous honor for me and my entire family," Viviano said during a news conference on Wednesday.
Hathaway left the court on Jan. 21, but her departure was publicly known much earlier in January.
Republicans have a 4-2 edge on the Supreme Court. Snyder expanded that majority with his choice.
