Organizers of a revived state fair in Michigan are taking extra steps to ensure people and animals at the event stay healthy.
The Great Lakes State Fair announced Monday that many surfaces at the event at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi will be treated with anti-bacterial protectants from Elite Surface Shield LLC. Sanitizing stations will be available at the event, which opens Friday and runs through Sept. 3.
Animal inspections also are planned.
Earlier this month, health officials said a strain of swine flu was responsible for an illness that sickened a child who attended the Ingham County Fair in mid-Michigan. Cases have been reported in other states.
The Michigan State Fair, which took place in Detroit, closed in 2009 because of a lack of funding.
