Green Oak Township robbery 2 A breaking and entering suspect died Monday during a shooting with police in Green Oak Township.

The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was breaking into a home on Bishop Road when a neighbor saw what was going on and called police. Green Oak Township police officers and Michigan State Police troopers chased the suspect back to his own home on Twilight Drive in Green Oak Township.

"A chase ensued from that location to here," said Green Oak Township Police Chief Robert Brookins.

A neighbor said she saw the suspect driving through backyards before stopping on the grass in front of his house.

"I could see him get out of the car, he left the door open, and run for the front door. A state trooper was right behind him," she said.

The suspect died during a confrontation with police. Police say he confronted officers with a gun. Officers shot him.

No officers were injured.

"There were some shots exchanged in the driveway of the home. The suspect was pursued into the home, there was an exchange of gunfire in the home between the suspect and officers," said Brookins.

Police are not releasing any more details from the shootout.

The suspect has a long rap sheet including forgery, larceny and controlled substance. He was released from the state department of corrections in November 2011.

"He lives with his mother and the mother was not home," said Brookins.

A state trooper who was involved in the shooting has been placed on leave, in compliance with department policy, police say.
