A $76,116 grant will go to the Grosse Pointe Park department of public safety as part of the Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The investment will be used to outfit firefighters with the equipment needed. U.S. Rep. Gary Peters made the announced Wednesday.

"I’m proud to announce over $76,000 in federal funding to support hard working firefighters in the Grosse Pointe Park area," said Peters. "Our first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect our families, that's why it's so important to ensure that they are equipped and ready to handle any emergency. By making an investment to improve safety in our community, we’re securing a brighter future for our region."

The primary goal of the grant is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations.

Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
