Gunman on the loose after shooting at Ferndale school

Student shot outside Taft Education Center

FERNDALE, Mich. – Ferndale police are investigating the shooting of a student Thursday afternoon at the Taft Education Center just off Eight Mile Road.

The center is for alternative adult education.

Police said the student was shot in the leg in the parking lot in what appeared to be an attempted robbery.

The gunman was still on the loose, but police could not give a specific description of the man. They used K-9 dogs to track the shooter, but were unsuccessful.

Ferndale High School, University High School, Kennedy School, Roosevelt Primary School and the Taft Education Center had been briefly placed on lockdown. While the lockdown has since been lifted, Thursday evening athletic activities were cancelled -- but concerts and meetings continue as scheduled.

Ferndale schools superintendent Gary W. Meier said, "We're cooperating with the police and will continue to do so as we try internally, and in cooperation with the police, to investigate this matter."

Police said officers have been called to the school several times in recent weeks for fights and weapons found in the school.
