TROY, Mich. -

Students at Hamilton Elementary School in Troy created a "finish line" Wednesday for their principal who never got to cross the real thing in Boston.

Dr. Pam Mathers was less than a mile away from completing the Boston Marathon Monday when two bombs went off - tragically killing three and injuring others.

Mathers was fortunately OK.

"We felt bad that she couldn't finish the 26.2 miles. So, we decided that we would help her finish these last .2," said fourth-grade student Ryan Smalley.

Her students helped Mathers reach her goal and decked out a finish line for her -- complete with banners, words of encouragement and a medal.

"To be home and to be safe and to see all of your faces is just such an inspiration to me," Mathers told the students. "You know what? I may not have gotten the medal but I've gotten many many more rewards from you. All of you are my medals."
