Sponsors and founders of the event wanted to draw 5,000 people. Final numbers were not available Saturday.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the current mark of 2,136 was set earlier this year in Rochester, N.Y.

Organizers plan to document the game and submit the attempt to Guinness auditors for world-record consideration.

In addition to the game, "Dodgeball in the D" featured other free activities, including the Detroit Red Wings fan experience, the Henry Ford Health System career experience and an appearance by NHRA Funny Car racer Brian Olatunji.
