Inkster City Council votes to cut $2M from police department

INKSTER, Mich. – The city of Inkster soon will be without at least 21 police officers after a vote Thursday night by City Council members.

The City Council decided to cut $2 million from the city's police department as part of the proposed budget. The department's budget was cut to $4 million which means it will have to let at least 21 officers go.

The layoff notices will go out immediately and layoffs will take effect June 30.

There are currently 37 full-time police officers and 10 part-time police officers with the Inkster Police Department.

There have been discussions with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department about a possible absorption of the Inkster Police Department.

It's unclear what the city's plan is from this point forward.
