YPSILANTI, Mich. -

John Porter, the former president of Eastern Michigan University, has died. He was 80.

Porter's death was announced Friday by the school. He led EMU for 10 years until 1989 and then was superintendent of Detroit schools for two years.

EMU says the university established a College of Technology and had record enrollment growth during the Porter years. The 1987 football team won the California Bowl. The College of Education building is named for Porter.

EMU says Porter died peacefully, but no other details were released. He lived in Ann Arbor.
