Kowalski to close 4 delis in Metro Detroit

Hamtramck-based meatpacker Kowalski will continue sales in markets

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Kowalski, the Hamtramck-based maker of sausage and other meat products, has decided to close several of its Metro Detroit delis.

The company is not commenting on reports it will close delis in Warren, Westland, Macomb Township and Hamtramck.

Christine Sanders has been been going to the Kowalski deli in Hamtramck for more than 30 years and said she is disappointed.

"I was just talking to the lady inside, Where am I going to get my holiday kielbasa and fresh kielbasa," Sanders asked.

Kowalski will continue operations at its home plant in Hamtramck and will sell its products in grocery stores.

James Stephens of Detroit said he is accustomed to going to the Kowalski deli and does not prefer the supermarket.

"Who wants to go through all the hustle and bustle of that when you can come here and it's like one on one here. You tell them what you want and they give it to you. You know, it's a big difference," Stephens said,.

Many regular deli customers voiced disappointment that the closings could not be postponed until after the Christmas holidays.

The deli closings will affect about 20 workers. Kowalski has offered those employees other positions within the company.
