DETROIT -

Whether your child is 5 or 15, teaching them to be safe when they're on their own is vital.

Shelly is just 6-years-old, but she is already training to fight off an attacker. Her father i the owner of Krav Magna Detroit. He says children as young as 5-years-old can learn to defend themselves.

"This is the age when they start riding the bikes, then they want to go a little bit further away and as much as we want to keep an eye on them, sometimes bad things happen," Pawl Cichowlas said.

Troy Police officer Jim Fed agrees. He thinks about the 8-year-old Brooklyn, New York boy who was kidnapped while walking home alone from summer camp. He was murdered.

Fed said he doesn't want to see that happen here. "We try and teach them kicks and punches - something to get the person away and them take off running and start yelling and screaming. Draw attention to yourself."

Some basic advice from the experts:

1. Don't talk to strangers

2. There is always safety in numbers. Try to never walk somewhere along.

3. Consider carrying pepper spray.
