A Detroit-area woman convicted of murdering her 4-year-old nephew, who authorities said was beaten and tortured to death on Mother's Day last year, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Matilda Gardner of Highland Park was sentenced Thursday in Detroit.
A jury in May convicted her of felony murder, second-degree murder, torture and first-degree child abuse.
Gardner's husband, Randy Gardner, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, torture and first-degree child abuse and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.
Authorities said Robert Byrd Jr. starved to death in his aunt and uncle's care.
The boy was bound by the wrists and beaten over a long period of time.
