A lightning strike hit the roof of an elementary school building in Romulus early Thursday morning.
The strike scorched a corner on the top of the Cory Elementary on Smith Road.
"Sometimes when the lightning strikes it sits there and smolders," said Romulus Fire Chief David Allison.
The building, which is currently being used as a preschool for about 300 children, will be closed until Monday because of the smoke and water damage in the gym.
No one was hurt.
Statement from school:
"The fire was contained to a portion of the roof over the gym. There was minimal damage. The initial cause seems to be a lightning strike. School will be closed Thursday and Friday to give crews time to make final assessments and for any clean up needed."
