The Detroit Zoo is increasing security after several people reported their vehicles being broken into.
The crimes are happening in the middle of the day at the Detroit Zoo parking garage along Woodward Avenue and 10 Mile Road in Royal Oak.
“I think that's horrible because it's supposed to be a safe place for people to go,” one zoo visitor told Local 4.
The Local 4 Defenders have learned eight Chrysler vehicles were targeted.
The crooks stole the in-dash GPS. Witnesses report seeing four men speeding off from the garage in a red car.
Investigators told the Local 4 Defenders the GPS units are being stolen because thieves can do it quickly.
Detroit Zoo spokeswoman Patricia Janeway released the following statement to the Local 4 Defenders:
"We now have security patrols taking place in the parking structure. We have also installed emergency call boxes and are working to add security cameras to monitor the parking lots at all times."
