Ferndale has lifted a moratorium on medical marijuana-related businesses operating within city limits.

On Monday, City Council approved a set of ordinances for people who want to open a medical marijuana business in three specific areas of the city -- in order to keep the businesses away from any heavily populated or residential areas.

The open zones are mostly industrial, and on the east side of the city.

One of the zones is where Chazzno Caffe is. Employee Clair Balmas said she thinks the move is a positive one.

"Everyone is really excited. I know a lot more people are really looking to get into it than they are to oppose it," she said. "Everyone's looking at it as a new opportunity and a way to make money."

Resident Mary Gregory lives off 9 Mile Road and said she's wary of the new ordinances.

"I think there would be a lot of people who would say that they were sick and they're not really sick -- just to get the marijuana," she said.

Clinical Relief on Hilton Road, which existed before the new ordinances, will be allowed to stay, City Council said.

"As long as it's legal and there's not a lot of trouble with it, it'll be all right," said resident Virginia Etter.

The new ordinances go into effect on Sept. 3.

New businesses must apply for a land use permit and be approved.
